triptico.com is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

Go, #NetBSD !
NetBSD may have found a new role: The AI-free FOSS OS
Increasing awareness and adoption, followed by increasing donations
<- by me on #TheRegister
I remember when the Linux kernel started using the GPL-2 License to prevent evil capitalism from happening.
Well apparently, the kernel maintainers just took a round of steaming shits on the GPL-2 License and #AI is totally on the menu. Not good if you like a secure system. Not enough to avoid #systemD and other bloat. This is like having a treaty with the USA or Russia and getting totally invaded and communities destroyed.
#NetBSD lives true to its roots, aiming for compatibility with carefully vetted code trees, and never has been a moving target. The choices we make today will save us endless grief decades from now.
Did you notice? The registration at @BoxyBSD was open and we welcomed several new members who can now access their free #VPS instance to start learning and testing #BSD based systems!
We love to see people getting on #BSD and providing them a free place for learning and testing with different systems like #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #FreeBSD any many other ones including #opensolaris with #openindiana!
Thanks to @gyptazy for operating and keeping up this free service for the #opensource community!

Today I tried to install #NetBSD 11 on an old Acer E15 laptop that I had been using as a #Debian CLI-only system.
The install was a little dicey. First one failed, but the second time I was able to go all the way through and configure WiFi on the Edimax N150 USB. I kept getting errors in the console about the BIOS (likely related to the battery, which is pretty dodgy).
X started but really didn't run. I could try messing with it, but I'll probably go to #OpenBSD next.

@mrgtwentythree @stefano@bsd.cafe @dch @stefano@rpi0w.stefanomarinelli.it Feeling rather guilty we didn't get it into #pkgsrc for 2026Q3 given it's been on #NetBSD throughout its development especially as #FreeBSD had a Day 1 release

Thank you, @dch@bsd.network
One of the peculiarities of littleFedi is that it was developed and tested first on the BSDs, then on illumos, and only later on Linux.
The first public instance, my own @stefano@rpi0w.stefanomarinelli.it account, runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W with NetBSD.
I don’t think many social platforms have started out on NetBSD in recent years.

Hello speakers!
What's happening... I gonna need you to go ahead and submit that abstract.
So if you could do that, that would be great. Okay...

So, I decided not to use ZFS for my in-home NAS. I checked it in another server with 2GB of RAM and... it works, but any heavy I/O operation resulted in killing spree of NetBSD kernel, OOM-killing the processes to free the memory. And NetBSD ZFS doesn't have knobs to fine-tune memory limits (IIRC they are still in development).
Instead, the usual approach - the old^Wmature technology - is in use. With the help of netbsd-users maillist (https://mail-index.netbsd.org/netbsd-users/2026/09/21/msg034895.html) I configured the next thing for HDD with RAIDframe, CGD and LVM:
1) Two identical 1TB disks: /dev/wd0 and /dev/wd1.
2) Both in use in RAID1 /dev/raid0 (as described in this document: https://netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-rf.html, but without any tricks for root FS).
3) /dev/raid0 divided in two parts: /dev/raid0a for root FS and /dev/raid0b.
4) Both disks (/dev/wd0 and /dev/wd1) has installed bootloader via /usr/sbin/installboot -o timeout=10 -v /dev/rwd0 /usr/mdec/bootxx_ffsv2 and /usr/sbin/installboot -o timeout=5 -v /dev/rwd1 /usr/mdec/bootxx_ffsv2
5) The /dev/raid0b was encrypted with CGD, so the /dev/raid0b -> /dev/cgd0.
6) The whole encrypted disk (/dev/cgd0a) was added as physical volume to LVM. The volume group /dev/vg0 was created with this PV and the logical volume /dev/vg0/lv0 was created inside this VG to store the real data.
The LVM allows to add new disk space, just by adding new physical volume to the volume group and then extending the logical volume and resizing the FFSv2. I tested it with a test USB drive and it works and even doesn't led to data loss
And the separate CGD separately encrypts existing physical volume and each new physical volume just in case
One quirk: the underlying physical disks (/dev/wd0 and /dev/wd1) plus /dev/raid0 should use MBR partition scheme or NetBSD disklabel - because the root partition should start from 0 sector - if it started not from zero sector, then the bootloader will be unable to find root FS. I tried to use GPT, but the installer was unable to create root partition not from zero sector, only from 2048 sector
Day 23
After exploring NetBSD on spare hardware, I've moved Linux (LMDE with Cinnamon desktop) off my main desktop (ThinkCentre M720q) and replaced it with NetBSD and Openbox.
I think its a keeper!

On 10 March 2021, I had only just fallen asleep when my phone started buzzing. Then another notification, and another. In a matter of minutes, 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. And not the cloud-computing kind.
Most of them were physically going up in a column of smoke in Strasbourg.
My wife looked at me and asked if I wanted a coffee. I nodded. It was going to be a very long day.
At EuroBSDCon 2026, I won't be giving a theoretical lecture on high availability. Instead, I’m going to tell the raw story of that night: the emergency recovery, the architectural choices that actually saved us, and the ones that crumbled under pressure (because we rarely talk about what fails).
Most of all, I’ll explain why that night changed my perspective, and why I’ve come to see BSD systems not just as operating systems, but as essential, practical tools for building simpler, more resilient infrastructure.
The official schedule is now live. If you want to hear a real-world post-mortem, join me on Saturday, 12 Sept at 11:15 (Room D.0.02).

This Isn't a Battle
After reading a post describing the FreeBSD community as 'toxic', I share a different perspective. This isn't a battle. It's a reflection on coexistence, the original Open Source spirit, and the quiet richness of taking a different path.
