Relating to our discussion promised on the topic of capitalism.
This encapsulates my thinking on capitalism.
I once believed regulation would tame the worst aspects of capitalism, and FDR did a pretty good job of it.
I think that in our current political climate, we'll never see those regulations or back in place.
And the problems with capitalism go much deeper than regulations could fix.
Capitalism by it's very nature ensures only a few thrive while everyone else is left struggling to survive.
The worst aspects of capitalism tho, are that it requires the destruction of the natural world for the benefit of only one species on the planet - humans.
The destruction of the natural world is the biggest cause of our climate crisis, imo.

We did this; all of it.
Not when there were civilizations that didn't take the route of inventing contraptions that would eventually kill off all life on the planet, which we face now.
Seems like a cop out, a way to avoid blame or accountability.
We all deal with adversity and tragedy in our own ways, I guess.
I do accept it as our reality.
I've found happiness despite it.
But the sense of needless loss is always there, buried deep in my psyche.

Pues un chaval ha mencionado en Twitter cómo le han estafado a través de ingeniería social, y dejado sin todos los ahorros 😱. Por supuesto, Birdchan siendo Birdchan, no han faltado los Capitanes Aposteriori que, viendo cómo una víctima de estafa decidía compartir su disgusto, deciden que lo mejor que pueden hacer es humillarle 💩
El caso es que esta es muy mi mierda y mucho mi mierda porque llevo casi una década trabajando en atención al cliente. Así que hilo 🧵 va
¿Qué es la ingeniería social? Me preguntas, clavando tu pupila en mi pupila azul. Según el Incibe, entendemos por ingeniería social "una técnica que emplean los ciberdelincuentes para ganarse la confianza del usuario y conseguir así que haga algo bajo su manipulación y engaño"
Los ingenieros sociales son expertos en manipular a las personas. Porque spoiler alert, las personas tendemos a confiar unas en otras. Eso de que el hombre es un lobo para el hombre queda muy bien como frase hecha, pero si eso fuera así nadie podría estafar a nadie. Existen estafadores porque existen dos cualidades humanas que todos tenemos salvo que seas Dexter Morgan: confianza y empatía.
Los ingenieros sociales explotan estas dos cualidades. Estudian los puntos débiles con los que puedan bajar tus defensas y hacer que te sientas seguro.
En el ejemplo de ese chico, el atacante llamó haciéndose pasar por su banco e incluso tuvo el rostro de decirle que, si no estaba seguro de su identidad, podía colgar la llamada ahora mismo y marcar el teléfono del banco.
Y tengo que quitarme el sombrero porque es un movimiento tan bueno que es diabólico. Porque ese es un consejo que cualquier operador bienintencionado daría a su cliente. El propio tuitero lo dice: en el momento en el que el operador usó esa frase, su desconfianza se vino abajo

¿Están vivos tus padres? Cuéntame lo que pasaría si un día te llamo y digo "Señor Menganito de tal. Soy Berni, llamando del servicio de urgencias del Hospital Random. Debo comunicarle que sus padres ingresaron tras un accidente..."
Dime, ¿Serías capaz de ser una persona perfectamente racional en ese momento y colgar el teléfono para volver a llamar al hospital? ¿O seguirías preguntando cosas?
Cualquier persona seguiría preguntando cosas en vez de colgar. Porque somos buenas personas, no monstruos. Con eso cuentan.
Un buen ingeniero social solo necesita TIEMPO. Porque ese es su mejor aliado: el tiempo.
Es fácil reírse de la aparente candidez de esta persona.
Escúchame: llevo décadas trabajando en atención al cliente. Te aseguro que todos tenemos un talón de Aquiles para caer en una estafa. Todos.
Pero Berni, qué hacemos entonces. Pues allá vamos con unos briconsejos:
1. Por espantoso que resulte, el mejor consejo se lo proporcionó el propio atacante a la víctima: si te llaman de tu banco contando algo extraño, CUELGA Y MARCA
No. No te disculpes. No hace falta. Cuelga. Ya.
Luego, marca el teléfono de tu banco y pregunta si te han llamado hace un rato. LO SABRÁN. Siempre podemos ver esas cosas.
2. No contestes a números extrañ- NO. ESTO YA NO FUNCIONA. Existen muchas tecnologías que permiten a un teléfono hacerse pasar por otro. Cuelga y llama.
3. Párate y piensa. Un banco nunca te va a meter prisa para cosas. Cómo regla general para instituciones bancarias o comerciales: cuanta más prisa te metan, más tranquilidad deberías tener.
4. Crea una palabra de seguridad para tus familiares. Lo mejor: créala en persona. ¿Esa broma absurda de la que sólo os reíais vosotros? ¿Esa palabra que usabas de pequeño en lugar de otra que era muy complicada? Diles a tus padres que la usen en caso de que te tengan que mandar un mensaje de emergencia.
5. Y no puedo mencionar esta última sin enfadarme. Porque habla mucho y mal de la mierda de mundo en el que vivimos ahora:
Si tienes padres mayores o abuelos, diles que cuelguen todas y cada una de las llamadas de marketing o a puerta fría que reciban. Siempre. Sin excepción.
Volvamos siempre a la urgencia: si una compañía comercial te mete prisa, es que la prisa la tienen ELLOS.
Termino el hilo no sin recomendar esta maravilla, obra de arte, biblia, evangelio, texto sagrado, secreto de los antiguos, puerta de marfil, monumento que es The Art of Deception. Un libro que es de 2002 y mejora como el vino.

Soy una persona muy fría para estas cosas porque lo de mi hermano el yonki (el mayor ingeniero social que conozco) me ha curtido mucho y nunca jamás hago caso a nada si no estoy esperando esa llamada (hasta he colgado al médico en casos en que era verdad que era el médico) pero eso no quita que cualquier día pueda caer en la cosa más absurda.

@jwz How big is that embed? Mastodon has a size limit on uploaded video, it seems reasonable it might apply to previews in cached posts too. (I don’t know what that size limit is, I’ce just run into it before trying to upload short videos. It’s not huge.)

@jwz I think what you're seeing with that one might just be a coincidence. That one has the image in question in an In the instagram ads one, there is no such tag in the body of the page, which will get used in the absence of og: tags by a lot of things.

This page made me want to close it on multiple occasions while reading it:

I ask because I very frequently get 503 errors trying to load your wordpress pages immediately after I see the mastodon posts linking to them. Maybe every server on the fediverse trying to fetch that simultaneously is timing out for a period of time?

(That's assuming you don't have some leftover filter server-side to block specific instances or UAs from the time you were experimenting with ways to prevent the Fediverse hug of death to your website, of course.)

Aprovecho para explicar dos cosas que me gustan mucho de #WriteFreely, el sistema minimalista de blogs en el que está basado #EscrituraSocial
1) Las opciones de privacidad: El blog puede ser privado (para notas propias), protegido por contraseña, no listado o público.
2) El modo novela: Esto me encanta. Permite quitar las fechas del blog y publicar como si fuera por capítulos, en orden del primero al último. Aparte también se puede elegir el modo blog tradicional o el modo "libreta".

@tecnijota @borjadelgado Conste que yo respondí amablemente a la pregunta inicial (me preguntaba por qué poníamos el precio por mes y no por año si resulta que el pago en realidad es anual). La pregunta en sí me parece apropiada. Le indiqué lo mismo que digo en ese toot y edité tb el otro toot para añadir tb el coste anual. Que luego ya me responda que mi toot original era «actuar de mala fe»... pues yo qué sé. Por si se lo pregunta alguien más he añadido el toot al hilo y queda todo cristalino.

@oneeyedman @borjadelgado @tecnijota Ahora estoy un poco preocupada de que no venga alguien a decirme que lo de «ahora con descuento» es un reclamo publicitario chungo porque en realidad llevamos ofreciendo el descuento desde el inicio. Esto es así no por márketing, sino casi por lo contrario: Tuvimos tal acogida el primer mes (el que duraba oficialmente el descuento) que nos pudimos arriesgar a mantenerlo porque sobrepasó nuestras previsiones más optimistas. Y así seguimos.

@oneeyedman @borjadelgado @tecnijota A veces me planteo quitar lo de "descuento" y dejar el precio con descuento ya como precio fijo forever, pero tampoco sé si este 2024 me puedo permitir esto, porque cada año es un mundo. Ahora por ejemplo hay pendientes 26 renovaciones y si no se renuevan entre ahora y enero, no sé si se puede mantener el descuento a partir de febrero. Se intentará, pero no lo sé seguro. Y siempre es más fácil quitar un descuento que subir un precio fijo, eso también.

@editora A ver tia, asumamos que en el universo es imposible contentar a todo el mundo (y que hay peña muy gilipollas, también). Haz las cosas lo mejor que puedas (ofcors) pero no te pongas a darle mil vueltas a una chorrada sin importancia cuando seguro tienes mil movidas más importantes de las que ocuparte en el proyecto.
Mi opinión personal por supuesto, por si te sirve de algo.

@mkl01 Porque nos parece interesante destacar la poca cantidad que supone al mes.
Nos encantaría poder ofrecer pagos mensuales y cancelar en cualquier momento, pero la plataforma de pago se nos come a comisiones y hacer que el pago sea anual es la única manera de poder mantener precios tan bajos.
De todas formas, para que no haya lugar a dudas, el valor anual está perfectamente indicado de manera visible en el mismo post donde se explica cómo suscribirse. Gracias por el interés :)

@microblogc ¡Gracias! Por aquí estamos cuando te apetezca, cada cual a su ritmo. Es un sistema muy minimalista, por ejemplo no permite poner imágenes, pero he desarrollado una pequeña herramienta para facilitar este tema.
Tiene dos cosas que me gustan mucho:
1) que te permite varias opciones de privacidad
2) que te permite publicar en modo "novela" esto es, sin que aparezcan fechas y en orden cronológico (o sea, lo primero que publicas es lo primera que se ve, como si fueran capítulos).

That said, I find it extremely hard to believe that this interpretation of the 14th amendment, which is very badly written, will stand up to to SCOTUS review. It removes the rights of a citizen to hold office without being convicted of any crime in court. The accusation of a crime cannot be sufficient to restrict the rights of states to nominate who they want.
I'd love to see him off the ballots, but I don't think this way will ultimately work.
@FirefighterGeek I actually saw an explanation of this. I cannot remember the legal term, but I think it was Glenn Kirschner who explained, some rules in the constitution do not require proof of a crime.
For instance, a rule says, you have to be born in the US to run for president. It is not a crime not to be born in the US, so you can be taken off the ballot without being proven guilty of a crime. That is why this is not always a decision which requires a court process.
@randahl I think that's one way to read the document. I personally don't think SCOTUS will view it that way. We'll see.

@randahl I wonder how many States need to remove him from the Presidential Ballot to ensure he cannot win? If he then appeals to SCOTUS and they rule in his favour, they are signing their own demise. He’s said he will be a dictator, and above the rule of law. If they do not rule in his favour, they get to keep their SCOTUS posts and power, and rule on other decisions. The corruption within SCOTUS is going to be important here.
@harriettmb one challenge is, if a state in which he was going to lose anyway, removes him from the ballot, that does not change the outcome.
@randahl @harriettmb the best outcome would have been if his GD convictions had been prosecuted two years ago. I blame the people who allow white collar crimes to proceed at a snail's pace while holding shoplifters and drug users until they plead out.
The second best outcome is Trump getting soundly defeated in the general election. A second insurrection is harder when you never get back in in the first place. And his party suffers as well.

The other issue is that due to the very wide variability in states electoral college numbers, there is no set number of states.
If my understanding of the electoral college, and the hearsay about red states sure to vote trump is correct, then It just needs 1 State to ban him as long as that state is Texas.

Porque yo me lo estoy planteando. Me resulta muy frustrante leer un titular que me interesa, entrar, y no poder acceder al contenido porque me pide una suscripción. No sé, diría que por educación igual poner “MURO DE PAGO” en la preview sería lo adecuado.
¿No sería inteligente habilitar un pago por uso? En plan 25 céntimos por lectura.

Instala el add-on Bypass Paywalls Clean (hay 2 versiones) y listo, el artículo de Diario Sur lo veo completo incluso en el móvil.
Otra opción que suele funcionar es el modo lectura. Algunas webs cargan todo el contenido y luego usan Javascript para poner encima un aviso

Cuando yo pago subscripciones, que lo hago, pienso en el medio en su conjunto, y el uso generalizado de paywalls es algo que me echa bastante para atrás y a lo que no quiero contribuir con mi dinero.
En este caso, y para mí, Diario del Sur es un periódico que quizá visito una o dos veces. No tiene sentido que me pidan suscribirme. Sí lo tendría que me dijesen "pagas 25 céntimos y puedes leer este artículo". Ellos ganarían más (algo) y yo podría acceder. Ahora lo que consiguen es que vete la URL diariosur.es porque sé que cada vez que haga clic ahí me va a arder el estómago.

1. Cut staff, increase prices, add debt, reduce services & restrict improvements.
2. Call the false savings 'profit' & syphon it from the business to shareholders.
3. Blame market conditions.
4. If the company fails, let taxpayers bail it out.
Something I’ve been thinking about a lot in the current battle over the future of (pseudo) AI is the cotton gin.
I live in a country where industrial progress is always considered a positive. It’s such a fundamental concept to the American exceptionalism claim that we are taught never to question it, let alone realize that it’s propaganda.
One such myth, taught early in grade school, is the story of Eli Whitney and the cotton gin. Here was a classic example of a labor-saving device that made millions of lives better. No more overworked people hand cleaning the cotton (slaves, though that was only mentioned much later, if at all). Better clothes and bedding for the world. Capitalism at its best.
But that’s only half the story of this great industrial time saver. Where did those cotton cleaners go? And what was the impact of speeding up the process?
Now that the cleaning bottleneck was gone, the focus was on picking cotton as fast as possible. Those cotton cleaners likely, and millions of other slaves definitely, were sent to the fields to pick cotton. There was an unprecedented explosion in the slave trade. Industrial time management and optimization methods were applied to human beings using elaborate rule-based systems written up in books. How hard to punish to get optimal productivity. How long their lifespans needed to be to get the lost production per dollar. Those techniques, practiced on the backs and lives of slaves, became the basis of how to run the industrial mills in the North. They are the ancestors of the techniques that your manager uses now to improve productivity.
Millions of people were sold into slavery and worked to death *because* of the cotton gin. The advance it provided did not, in fact save labor overall. Nor did it make life better overall. It made a very small set of people much much richer; especially the investors around the world who funded the banks who funded the slave purchases. It made a larger set of consumers more comfortable at the cost of the lives of those poorer. Over a hundred years later this model is still the basis for our society.
Modern “AI” is a cotton gin. It makes a lot of painstaking things much easier and available to everyone. Writing, reading, drawing, summarizing, reviewing medical cases, hiring, firing, tracking productivity, driving, identifying people in a lineup…they all can now be done automatically. Put aside whether it’s actually capable of doing any of those things *well*; the investors don’t care if their products are good, they only care if they can make more money off of them. So long as they work enough to sell, the errors, and the human cost of those errors, are irrelevant. And like the cotton gin, AI has other side effects. When those jobs are gone, are the new jobs better? Or are we all working that much harder, with even more negative consequences to our life if we fall off the treadmill? One more fear to keep us “productive”.
The Luddites learned this lesson the hard way, and history demonizes them for it; because history isn’t written by the losers.
They’ve wrapped “AI” with a shiny ribbon to make it fun and appealing to the masses. How could something so fun to play with be dangerous? But like the story we are told about the cotton gin, the true costs are hidden.

NixOS will provide a good experience and many software and modules ready to use to configure services. If a software exists, there are good chances it's packaged in Nix.
Guix comes with limited hardware support until you add "guix-nonfree" repository adding firmware and the regular Linux kernel to replace the linux-libre kernel.
Guix community is smaller than NixOS, and configuring your system requires to learn some Scheme (a LISP language), while NixOS requires to learn Nix, something that looks more natural for people not used to LISP.
Guix is entirely community driven while NixOS/Nix is more and more company driven (in some sense, it's still people behind, but they all work for companies with a business model built on top of Nix so there are conflicts of interest sometimes)
Ok, here me out on this.
Laptops (and maybe tablets too) shouldn't necessarily always have internal batteries.
And I don't just mean non-swappable batteries, I mean none at all. Here's why:
With USB-C power delivery, you have a wide selection of power banks to run basically any device from. You get to choose the right capacity for your use case. If you use your laptop mostly at your desk but maybe need it once in a while out of the house, a small one is enough. If you go on a long trip and want to run it the whole time, bring the power to match.
But also, in case your device is under threat of being compromised, let's say by law enforcement or other malicious actors, pulling the power cable when there's no internal battery is a quick and sure way to power down and safely lock your device (assuming you have disk encryption).
The Price of Salt is, in my opinion, a very beautiful novel. The recent movie Carol, featuring Cate Blanchett and Roonie Mara, is based in this book and rather faithful.
Highsmith's crime novels like Strangers on a Train are also brilliant.
All Highsmith's work is very recommendable. The Ripley series are very good books, special The Talented Mr. Ripley and Ripley's Game (which also was made into two movies: one by Wim Venders and a later one, better in my opinion, by Liliana Cavani featuring John Malkovich).
This _Plain Soleil_ french movie has a very different ending that the book and the remake movie that I consider more interesting and shocking.
